Configure third-party software on Microsoft Windows to access SAS data

Some third-party software on Windows (such as Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, and Microsoft Excel) contain ODBC and OLE DB interfaces that can be used to access SAS data depending on your SAS environment and which SAS products are licensed. For instructions about accessing SAS data with third-party software using ODBC or OLE DB, see the sections below.

ODBC Interface

You can use the SAS ODBC driver to connect to a SAS session on the same host as third-party software or connect to a remote SAS/SHARE® or SAS® Scalable Performance Data Server (SPDS).

To configure either type of ODBC connection, you need to start by downloading the latest SAS ODBC driver.

See the associated SAS documentation for details about setting up the ODBC interface:

         • SAS® ODBC Drivers Download

Connecting to a SAS session on the Same Host:

You can use the SAS ODBC driver to access SAS data on the same host as the third-party software under these conditions:

              •  Base SAS® for Windows is licensed and installed on the same host.

For more information, see the documentation for Setting Up a Connection to Local Data

Connecting to a SAS server on a Remote Host:

You can use the SAS ODBC driver to access SAS data on a remote host under these conditions:

For more information, see the following documentation:
               •  Setting up a Connection to SAS/SHARE Server
               •  Setting Up a Connection to SPD Server

OLE DB Interface

Note: The OLE DB interface is not as dynamic as the ODBC interface.

You can use the SAS OLE DB data provider to access data as follows:
