The following error might occur when you use SAS/ACCESS^® Interface to Oracle and you attempt to insert a value type VARCHAR into an Oracle field.

ERROR: ORACLE execute error: ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column.

The problem occurs when the following events are true:

The database character set is set a multi-byte character set (for example, AL32UTF8, JA16SJIS, or JA16EUC.
You try to insert a value of type VARCHAR2 into a column that is defined to have a length of more than 1333 bytes. The same table either has another column of type LONG or at least one other column of type VARCHAR2 with a length of more than 1333 bytes.
The NLS_LANG environment variable is set to a single-byte character set.
