Validating the SAS® 9.4 platform when you encounter issues with SAS® 360 Direct

IT administrators might encounter issues with SAS® 360 Direct, as described in SAS KB0040542, “IT Administrator resources to ensure that your SAS® 360 Direct environment runs smoothly.”

A quick workaround is to validate your SAS® 9.4 environment. As needed, see the rest of this SAS KB article for additional information.

Validate the SAS 9.4 Servers Used with SAS 360 Direct

To confirm whether the various SAS servers that you have deployed are running properly, you must complete a few simple steps. Note that the SAS 9.4 platform must be running properly in order for SAS 360 Direct to work. If issues occur when validating, you should troubleshoot those issues before using SAS 360 Direct.

See the following table for summaries of the server validation information:

ServerValidation Method
SAS® Metadata Server Successfully log on using SAS® Management Console with a SAS Administrator user ID.
SAS® Content Server
  1.  In SAS Management Console, on the Plug-ins tab, click the + to expand the Server Manager node.
  2. Highlight SAS Content Server
  3. Right-click the server and select Validate
  4. Log on using valid credentials for an unrestricted user defined in SAS Metadata Server.

A Validation Successful message should occur.
SAS Pooled Workspace Server
  1. In SAS Management Console, on the Plug-ins tab, click the + to expand the Server Manager node.
  2. Expand SASApp
  3. Highlight the SASApp - Logical Pooled Workspace Server
  4. Right-click the server1 and select Validate.

A Validation Successful message should occur.
SAS Object Spawner If either SAS® Stored Process Server or one of the Workspace Servers validates, then the SAS Object Spawner is running

1Use the server context name that you entered during the deployment. In the table, the server context name is SASApp

Validation Summary for the SAS Server Tier

The Instructions.html files contain your specific environment. These files are located in the <sasconfig>/Lev1/Documents/Instructions.html or <sasconfig>/Lev1/Documents/Backups folder on each tier (meta, compute, and mid-tier).

To validate the SAS server tier, complete the following steps:

  1. Log on to the machine hosting on one or more of the SAS servers.
  2. Start SAS Management Console using the command for the appropriate operating system.
    • Windows
Start SAS SAS Management Console 9.4

    • UNIX
      Enter the following command:

      SAS-installation-directory/sasmc
      Here is an example:
      /opt/sas/SASManagementConsole/9.4/sasmc

  3. Log on to SAS Metadata Server using valid credentials such as the SAS Administrator. (For example, sasadm@saspw.)
  4. In SAS Management Console, on the Plug-ins tab, expand the Server Manager node.
  5. Right-click the SAS Content Server node and select Validate.

SAS Management Console attempts to make a WebDAV connection to the server. If the connection is successful, the following message is displayed:

    Validation Successful!

    This message indicates the following

    • A WebDAV server is listening on the specified host and port.

    • The first configured base path exists on the server.

If the connection is not successful, an error message is displayed.

  6. Expand the SAS Application Server node. (The default name is SASApp.)
  7. Select the server that you want to validate, such as the SASApp - Logical Pooled Workspace Server.
  8. Right-click the server and click Validate. The following message should occur:

    Validation Successful!

Note: If problems occur when validating the Server tier, open a Tech Support Case and/or review the associated logs. After opening the Tech Support Case, you can request access to upload the logs via the SASTSDrive. Your specific log locations are provided in your Instructions.html file. See the following resource for the default log locations for Server logs: Default Locations for Server Logs

In a custom installation, you can choose to place all of your server-tier log files in a single directory. If you select this option, your server-tier log files are written to the path that was specified during installation. (For example, SAS-configuration-directory/Lev1/Logs.)

Validate the SAS Web Applications used with SAS 360 Direct
