SAS® Visual Analytics displays "server did not understand the application request for data" or "No item selected" in a PDF or in modern viewer

When printing a SAS Visual Analytics report or displaying the report in the modern viewer, some report objects might be missing. When this problem occurs, you might see one or both of these messages:

The server did not understand the application request for data.

<No item selected>

Typically, the problem occurs for report objects that display data items that are calculated from a parameter. Sometimes SAS Visual Analytics fails to query the server for the results of this indirect calculation. When this problem occurs, the Transport Services log usually contains errors that are similar to the following, where pr28 is the ID for the parameter:

Error getting QueryRunner - java.lang.Exception: Missing expression parameter value while parsing :#{pr28} (Reason : InvalidInternalState)

java.lang.Exception: Missing expression parameter value while parsing :#{pr28}

As a workaround, you can add a data source filter that references the parameter directly. For example, if your parameter is named Region Parameter, the expression might look like this:

( 'Region Parameter'p NotMissing ) OR ( 'Region Parameter'p Missing )

This filter does not limit the number of rows returned from the query because the condition is always true.
