The error message "Note: Unable to open SASUSER.REGSTRY. WORK.REGSTRY will be opened instead" appears when you invoke SAS® 9.1

When you invoke SAS 9.1, the following warning and notes might appear:

NOTE: Unable to open SASUSER.REGSTRY. WORK.REGSTRY will be opened instead. NOTE: All registry changes will be lost at the end of the session. WARNING: Unable to copy SASUSER registry to WORK registry. Because of this, you will not see registry customizations during this session. NOTE: Unable to open SASUSER.PROFILE. WORK.PROFILE will be opened instead. NOTE: All profile changes will be lost at the end of the session. NOTE: This SAS session is using a registry in WORK. All changes will be lost at the end of this session.

This message can be caused by corrupted profiles. To correct this, perform the following steps:

  1. Close SAS.
  2. Open Windows Explorer. There are several ways to do this. Here are a few different ways, dependent on your Windows operating system:
  1. In the Windows XP environment, go to C:\Documents and Settings\your–user–id\My Documents\My SAS Files\9.1.

In the Windows Vista environment, go to C:\Users\your–user–id\My Documents\My SAS Files\9.1.

  2. Locate the file profile2.sas7bcat and rename it as profile2.old.
  3. Locate profile.sas7bcat and rename this file as profile.old.
  4. Locate regstry.sas7bitm and rename this file as regstry.old.
  5. Restart SAS.

If the messages still appear, send Technical Support a copy of your log window and a copy of your sassetup.log file, which is located in the !SASROOT directory (the default location is C:\Program Files\SAS\SAS 9.1).

There are a variety of reasons for corrupt profiles. In some cases, the reasons are very hard to isolate. Common causes include print drivers, conflicting applications, or a full disk. You can check the Windows Event Viewer to see if any errors appear there when this problem occurs. To see the Event Viewer, select Start ► Settings ► Control Panel ► Administrative Tools ► Event Viewer (or, depending on your system, Start ► Control Panel ► Administrative Tools ► Event Viewer). Then check both Applications and System.
