The "Check for Updates" process fails in some 8.x versions of SAS® Enterprise Guide® and SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office


The Check for Updates process for some of the 8.releases of SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, and SAS® Visual Analytics Add-In for Office does not work correctly because of conditions that are related to certificate validation. Manual steps are required to correct the functionality with the Check for Updates process for existing installations of these clients.

Specifically, this issue impacts 8.x releases prior to 8.2 Update 5.

Here is an example of the Check for Updates panel:

Important! DO NOT click the Close and Install button. Clicking Close and Install causes the update to fail and the following window appears that states "An error occurred . . . Unable to download the update."

Complete the following steps to correct this issue.

Note: You should perform these steps only if the clients mentioned above are in use.

  1. Download the following AutoUpdate.zip file and then unzip the contents:

    https://tshf.sas.com/techsup/download/hotfix/HF2/BIRD/autoupdate/66676/AutoUpdate.zip
     
  2. Navigate to your SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, or SAS Visual Analytics Add-In for Office installation directory.

    The default locations for SAS Enterprise Guide, depending on the bitness, are as follows:

The default locations for SAS Visual Analytics Add-In for Office, depending on the bitness, are as follows:

  1. Rename the existing AutoUpdate.exe file to AutoUpdate_OLD.exe.
  2. Copy the downloaded AutoUpdate.exe file to the 8 folder.
  3. When you restart the application and encounter the Check for Updates panel, select Close and Install.

Note: The Check for Updates failure does not occur in the above clients after either the 8.2 release Update 5 or later or the 8.3 release Update 1 or later is present.

Note: If you have 8.2 Update 4 or earlier, the Check for Updates process will be a two-step update process to get to 8.3 Update 6. The first update process updates to 8.2 Update 5, and then the second update process updates to 8.3 Update 6.

Note: The 8.3 clients have system requirements of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 and Microsoft Runtime Components 2019. The Check for Updates process updating to 8.3 Update 1 installs the system requirements of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 and Microsoft Runtime Components 2019 if needed.
