The SAS®9 Platform and the "Lift and Shift (Rehosting)" cloud strategy

“Lift and shift” (also known as “rehosting”) is a cloud migration strategy where you move applications and data from an on-premises environment to the cloud with minimal or no code changes. In other words, the process replicates the existing on-premises infrastructure in the cloud.

SAS does not support a lift and shift of an existing SAS9 deployment from on-premises environment to a public cloud using cloud vendor migration tools. SAS does not support this strategy given the nature of how the SAS9 platform is deployed and configured with respect to SAS services and SAS metadata that is stored internal to the SAS9 platform.

Some of the cloud vendor live migration tools include the following:

Note that this list of cloud vendor migration tools is not comprehensive, but it contains a few of the commonly used cloud migration tools.

In addition, SAS does not support methods that involve simply copying the SASHOME and SASConfig directories from an existing SAS9 deployment on-premises to a public cloud environment in order to get a new SAS9 deployment set up in a public cloud environment.

However, SAS does support a lift and shift of SAS program files, SAS applications, and SAS data files from on-premises to the public cloud.

If you are moving to a cloud environment from an on-premises environment, SAS recommends that you do a new installation of the SAS9 platform on the public cloud instance. SAS especially recommends this new installation if you are using an instance that already contains the operating system.

For additional information about best practices when moving to a cloud environment, see SAS Note 62239, “SAS® on the public cloud tuning guidelines,” and engage your cloud vendor.
