SAS® Add-in for Microsoft Office error "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication other memory is corrupt" might occur


After you install SAS® Add-in 8.6 for Microsoft Office, the following error can occur if you use the connection profile to make a connection to SAS® Metadata Server in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft PowerPoint:

                Unable to connect to the Metadata Server    A connection could not be established to a SAS Metadata Server running on port XXXX on host XXXXXXXX.     Server Response: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

This error occurs with older versions of Microsoft Office and Office 365, such as, but not limited to the following:

Note: To locate the Microsoft Excel version information, complete the following steps:

  1. Open a blank Microsoft Excel workbook.
  2. Click File. Then, select Account (or More ► Account).
  3. View the Product Information details in the right pane. Then, click the About Excel box to view the entire version and bitness of Microsoft Excel.

Hot Fix

To fix the error, apply the hot fix. This fix works with the currently installed, older version of Microsoft Office or Office 365 with SAS Add-in 8.6 for Microsoft Office. This hot fix also works with an updated Microsoft Office or Office 365 version. The hot fix for this issue updates the SAS® Integration Technologies client component that SAS Add-in 8.6 for Microsoft Office uses to make the connection to SAS Metadata Server.

Workaround

Upgrade to a Newer Microsoft Office or Office 365 Version

If you do not apply the hot fix, a possible workaround for this issue is to upgrade the current Microsoft Office or Office 365 version to a newer version (or the latest version). This error does not typically occur when you upgrade to newer versions, such as, but not limited to the following:
