"ERROR: CLI error trying to establish connection..." occurs after you upgrade SAS® Viya®


After you upgrade to SAS Viya 2026.03 LTS, 2026.04, 2026.05, or 2026.06, one of the following errors might occur:

ERROR: CLI error trying to establish connection: [SAS][ODBC SQL Server Wire Protocol driver]Unable to dynamically load client DLL S0openssl.so. : [SAS][ODBC SQL Server Wire Protocol driver]SSL Initialization failure.  

or

ERROR: CLI error trying to establish connection: [SAS][ODBC SQL Server Wire Protocol driver]Unable to determine the OpenSSL version for: /usr/lib64/libcrypto.so.1.1

or

ERROR: CLI error trying to establish connection: [SAS][ODBC SQL Server Wire Protocol driver]Socket closed.: [SAS][ODBC SQL Server Wire Protocol driver]SSL Handshake Failure reason [Unknown SSL Error]

A patch for this issue has been created for 2026.03 LTS, 2026.04, 2026.05, and 2026.06. If you use one of these versions, apply the latest patches.

After applying the patch, remove the SSLLibname and CryptoLibname options from your ODBC DSN.
