In workflow, you cannot select a specific supervisor when assigning or submitting an item for review.

As a result, the following might occur:

• A supervisor is not displayed in the Select a Member dialog box.
• Users can see other supervisors but not the desired supervisor.
• Permission changes to the supervisor account do not resolve the issue.
• Users report needing to "elevate" a supervisor so that they can be selected for workflow approval.

The Supervisor Approval workflow step is configured to use security groups as workflow participants. Users who are not members of the configured participant group are not displayed in the supervisor selection list, regardless of other permission changes.

Workaround

To work around this issue, complete the following steps:

1. Add the affected supervisor to the participant security group that the workflow uses:
   1. Identify the workflow that the affected entity uses. 
   2. Open the Supervisor Approval task.
   3. Review the configured participant groups.
   4. Find the user in Manage Investigate and Search ► Permissions ► Users.
2. Add the supervisor to the required group under Group Membership.
3. Save your changes.

Validation

1. Open the supervisor selection list in the workflow step.
2. The newly added supervisor should now be available for selection.

Additional Information

Before investigating permissions, verify whether another supervisor with a similar role already works.

Questions to Ask

• Can you provide an example of another supervisor who is displayed correctly?
• What groups is that supervisor a member of?
• Is the affected supervisor a member of the same groups?
• Which workflow is being used (Intel, SAR, or RFS)?

Comparison with a known working user often identifies the missing group membership immediately.
