When importing a Microsoft 2007 binary file (XLSB) into SAS Enterprise Guide 5.1, the following error might appear:
A problem was encountered while attempting to use OLE DB to read data from the source file.
This may be caused by the source file being opened within another application or security issues while attempting to access the source file.
Because of this problem the Import Data wizard is unable to continue.
Other variations of the file (such as XLSM and XLSX) are imported properly. The XLSB file is also properly imported into SAS Enterprise Guide 4.3.
The error occurs in SAS Enterprise Guide 5.1 because the engine that is accessing the binary Excel 2007 workbook (XLSB file) incorrectly determines that the binary file was created with a beta version of Excel 2007. As a result, the engine won't open the file.
To resolve the engine problem, install the Office 2007 Service Pack 2 from Microsoft's Web site (or via Microsoft Update). After installing the update, the XLSB file can be imported in SAS Enterprise Guide without issue.
